Last Days of Doc's Life

Doc Holliday died on November 8, 1887 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado of Consumption (or tuberculosis). After Doc had his fight at the O.K. Corral he went to Leadville, Colorado. The winters were too cold to survive with tuberculosis, so he moved down to Denver where there were warmer winters. When that was not working out he moved to Glenwood Springs where the natural springs could maybe help with his condition. Doc  Holliday stayed in Hotel Glenwood for the last 57 days of his life. He died in the morning after he asked for his last glass of whiskey. Legend also has it that he looked down at his bare feet and said, "This is funny." although many historians consider this unlikely as he would have been too suck on the day to speak. Even if he did or didn't say anything, no one ever expected him to die in bed with his boots off.

Doc Before Tombstone

Doc Holiday never stayed in one place for long. He either gets in a lot of trouble or just plain bored. Whenever he got himself into legal problems, he was off to a new place again. He never had too much money on him, according to Kate Elder the most he has ever had in the bank was $8,000, but not from gamboling, it was an inheritance. He was a major gambler but never won too much. When Wyatt Earp, sent him a letter saying there was a need for a man with a talent for playing cards, Doc was off to Tombstone. Doc was currently had a relationship with Kate Elder, or also known as the prostitute Big Nose Kate. She had no joy in going to Tombstone, so she threatened Doc that if he goes to Tombstone she wouldn’t come with. They both packed and parted ways. She ran off to eastern Arizona, and Doc began his journey to Tombstone, Arizona. They did not separate completely, on some legal papers Kate still signed her name "Kate Holiday". Doc took some pit stops in Las Vegas and New Mexico to let some old friends know that he was doing fine. He arrived in Tombstone by late September.

Doc Holliday and Big Nose Kate

Doc Holliday and Kate Elder (Big Nose Kate) met in Fort Griffin, Texas 1877 while Doc was playing a poker game with Ed Bailey. Ed drew a gun at Holliday but before he knew it Doc sliced his stomach. Doc was arrested, and then Kate set fire to a barn with an idea. While the people were tending to the fire, Kate put a pistol up to the man who had Holliday and forced him to be released. Doc and Kate then ran off with stolen horses. That event started Doc and Kate’s off and on relationship. When they had many fights and separated, but always found a way back to each other. When Doc went off to Tombstone they had a fight and went separate ways. After she calmed down she went looking for him and found him in Prescott, Arizona along the way. They arrived in Tombstone together. Both being so feisty they had a very hot-tempered relationship

Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp

In movies it shows that Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp met in Doge City. According to Wyatt Earp they met in a saloon in Fort Griffen, Texas, in the winter of 1877-1878. The real date is unknown.

A story is told about how Holliday saved Earp's life in Dodge City 1878. Two Texas cattle herders, Ed Morrison and Toby Driscall, were teasing Wyatt and were about to shoot him. Doc suddenly butted in with a revolver in each hand. Ed and Toby were distracted, so Wyatt pistol-whipped Morrison on the head. One was stupid enough to pull out their gun so Doc shot him without any hesitation. Doc and Wyatt were great friends since.

His parents were Henry Burroughs Holliday and Alice Jane Holliday. His mother died of tuberculosis in 1866, Doc was 14 at the time. His father married a new woman 3 years later and moved to Valdosta, Georgia. When Holliday was 19 he began dental school in Philidelphia. On March 1, 1872, he received the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery from Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery. Doc opened a dental office with Arthur C. Ford in Atlanta.

Doc Holliday was very fast with a pistol and had accuracy less than perfect. He has gotten into 4 known pistol fights. Holliday had 17 arrests in his lifetime, only one was for murder.

In, The Arizona Daily Star: Interview with Virgil Earp, on May 30, 1882. Virgil Earp summed up his thoughts on Doc;

"There was something very peculiar about Doc. He was gentlemanly, a good dentist, a friendly man, and yet outside of us boys I don't think he had a friend in the Territory. Tales were told that he had murdered men in different parts of the country; that he had robbed and committed all manner of crimes, and yet when persons were asked how they knew it they could only admit that it was hearsay, and that nothing of the kind could really be traced up to Doc's account. He was a slender, sickly fellow, but whenever a stage was robbed or row started, and help was needed, Doc was one of the first to saddle his horse and report for duty."
